Emily Kneen

Choreographer - Madhatters

I started at Madhatters back in 2008, making me one of the originals.

Growing from a student into a teacher has been such a special journey, and being part of the Madhatters family — in every sense — means the world to me.

The relationship between Madhatters and Move it is longstanding, I am very grateful for the tuition and advice Kate shared with me for my freestyle qualification.

I qualified in freestyle in 2020 when I joined the teaching team at Madhatters, a real privilidge having risen through the grades . I have since qualified in Ballet and PBT.

My favourite genre to teach is freestyle, however, I love teaching any genre and really enjoy working with the young ones.

More about me

Alongside teaching at Madhatters, I also work at Nobles hospital, I love spending time with my family  and doing crafts! I started dancing age 3 in Ballet with Miss Peacock. As I grew, more genres became available to me I ended up wanting to do them all! Over the last 19 years I have trained in Ballet,  PBT, Tap, Theatre Craft, Contemporary, Lyrical, Musical Theatre and Freestyle. My love of dance was born out of watching my mum teach the seniors and seeing how passionate she is about passing on her love of performance.

I believe that dance is an amazing expression of your inner self and everyone should be given the opportunity to shine through their dance and be proud of their performance.

I have taken a variety of different dance exams with the  IDTA, gaining multiple honours and distinctions and also performed in all of our productions in several different venues.   I love the atmosphere, the excitement, and the adrenaline that comes with every show. Watching the passion and enthusiasm of the young performers as they take to the stage is pure magic, and I love being part of making those moments happen.

Favourite memory:

I have so many, it is difficult to choose however, I think that being awarded with the Madhatters plate in my last year as a student at Madhatters, was extremely special. I never thought I would be awarded that, My mum has always had higher expectations for me than anyone else in the school.

Meeting Anna Jones at the IDTA conference dinner. I was newly qualified as a freestyle teacher.

Fun Facts:

  • I finally convinced Miss Helen to get on stage last year. I like to think it was my charm, but after 16 years it was probably surrender. I love to jiggle with the little ones, it fills my heart with joy

  • I am the voice of calm in my mums head when things don’t quite go according to plan.

  • I manage the mayhem; calming it isn't in my job description.

  • Tell me it's impossible, and you've just given me another reason to prove it can be done
